Rabbits

Our journey with rabbits started in 2015. We have owned and fostered several since then, but two have stood out as the best rabbit breeds for our micro farm: Standard Rex and Angora. Our Standard Rex are pedigreed. They are a large breed of rabbit with velvety soft fur. They generally have good temperaments. Our buck has the best personality of any rabbit I have ever met; most visitors to the farm have fond memories of Wilson. In my experience, socialization from a young age is key to how easily rabbits can be handled as they grow up.

Rabbits serve several purposes on our farm. The garden receives much of its nutrients from rabbit manure. Rabbit manure can be applied as a “cold compost” or be vermicomposted. The Angoras provide fiber. And above all, the rabbits provide companionship.

Angora rabbits were added to the farm in 2022. They are a medium sized rabbit that we primarily keep for fiber. Our stock is pedigreed but not pure bred. Our does are 37.5% English Angora, 26.6% Satin Angora, 14.6% French Angora, 12.5% Holland Lop, and 8.8% German Angora. They are third generation White Ear Crosses bred by a local farm. Our buck is a mix of Satin, English, and German Angoras with 12.5% Holland Lop. He is White Eared with a short coat.
